This standard was used to symbolize the connection between the military and the emperor, and also the importance of the emperor in Rome. It was a portrayal of the emperor depicted in metal, which was carried by the first cohort of the legion. Later on in the empire, the faces on this standard might have begun to include more members of the ruling party.
