Purpose of Military Standards
The objectives of the Military Standards were to both rally the troops, and to give a point of recognition to follow during the heat of battle. In a larger sense however, they symbolized the honor and glory of Rome. They were so important to the Roman troops that Emperor Augustus threatened Persia with war in order to regain their lost Standards. These Standards were also used in religious ceremonies, and during these festivals, they were covered in oil and garlands. It also later became arguable that these Standards were worshipped by the troops that held them.
