The Aquila was the most important Standard of the Roman military. It went into battle at the front of the troops and if this Standard were lost in battle, the legion responsible for it would be disgraced. It was the symbol of the legion, and its design was that of an eagle (typically represented in gold) on top of a staff. The wings of the eagle were pointed up toward the sky and often were surrounded by a laurel wreath.
